A number of Hercules ant colonies were found in Iceland between 1980-90 but have not been documented since. However, they have been found outside where they carved nests into old wood. This shows that the species is capable of surviving without human shelter in the Icelandic nature. Thus it is not unlikely that these ants still live in Iceland but have gone unnoticed in recent years. What makes this species special is its use of major and minor workers. The minor workers are small and carry out duties similare to those of worker ant from different species. Major workers however are far larger than most other ants and can chew through wood and insect exoskeletons.
