Roger’s ant

  • Latin name: Hypoponera Punctatissima
  • Color: Dark
  • Number of queens: Many
  • Size: 2-3 mm
  • Habitat: Inside houses in walls and under floors.
  • Colony size: <100 ants
  • Diet: Insects

Roger’s ant colonies are generally very small. In Iceland, they have only been found under floors and in walls where they live on warm pipes. These ants never go far from their nest so they never come into contact with humans. Because of this, many humans who have Roger’s ants in their houses are completely unaware of the ants until the colony starts producing queens which then emerge from cracks in walls or floors. These queens can sting if they get stuck under clothes. These stings are not dangerous but can be very painful.
